What is the History of the Waltzers?

Waltzers have been providing fun and excitement at fairgrounds for many years! Funfair and amusement attraction providers love to entertain people of all ages with this fast spinning classic fairground ride for the masses.

The Waltzer ride first originated in the UK in the 1920s, and it has been entertaining people ever since! In 1920, Dennis Jefferies created the first design for the Waltzer fairground ride in Congleton, Cheshire. He actually used his young nieces as his first ever passengers. It doesn't sound like that would hold up to our rigorous modern safety standards!

Dennis Jefferies named this early Waltzer ride "The Whirligig" and he is credited with coming up with the first Waltzer ride design that is still used at fairgrounds and funfairs today.

In 1930, a version of the Waltzer was created from a German ride called the 'Noah's Ark Ride’. This ride is now commonly associated with the former Scottish firm Maxwell and Sons of Musselburgh, here in the UK.

Since 1930, the Waltzer fairground ride has been altered and improved to make sure it is fun and safe for as many fairground lovers as possible! The original Waltzer design only had 10 cars for riders, and this has since been expanded to include more and more fairground enthusiasts of all ages.

Modern Waltzer Designs

Even though some of the cars in early models had clever brakes that activated when the safety bar was opened, this design has been further improved by modern fairground ride creators. Modern Waltzers now have a complete braking system that stops every car when there are any potential safety issues with the fairground ride.

Waltzers have a nostalgic and interesting history in the UK, and they continue to be popular at traditional fairgrounds and small funfairs. In 2021, Alton Towers even introduced a Waltzer as one of its brand new attractions.
