What is the history of Hull Fair?
Hull Fair is Europe's largest travelling funfair, attracting thousands of visitors each year to the city of Hull in East Riding of Yorkshire. Originating at least 750 years ago, Hull Fair has a rich and diverse history, making it among the oldest and most established funfairs in the country. The East Riding of Yorkshire funfair is held annually and is a lively and vibrant event that is steeped in tradition, providing a fun and exciting experience for visitors of all ages.
Hull Fair, in Kingston-upon-Hull, first received Royal Charter way back in 1279, although it would have existed before then. One of the most famous historical incidents involving the Hull Fair was when the British Empire moved to the Gregorian calendar, removing 11 days from 1752. These 11 days coincided with the Hull Fair, and led to angry masses storming the streets demanding the return of the days! The protesters got their wish, and the 11th October, or the Friday closest to it, became the official date for the Hull Fair every year.

Throughout its long history, Hull Fair has established itself as part of East Yorkshire's cultural heritage.
