How to Play the Hook a Duck Funfair Game

At We Are Tricycle, we bring the classic charm of fairground games to your events, and one of our all-time favourites is the Hook a Duck game. This delightful and simple game is a staple at funfairs and a hit among guests of all ages. Here’s your guide to playing and enjoying this timeless funfair game.
'Hook a Duck' is a traditional game found at funfairs, where players use a rod with a hook to catch floating ducks in a water-filled tub or pond. It's a game of skill and dexterity that promises fun for everyone.
Equipment Required for Hook a Duck
If you'd like to set up Hook a Duck yourself, then all you need is the following!
- A water basin or inflatable pond
- Numerous rubber ducks, each with a loop on top and a sticker on the bottom
- Fishing rods with hooks
- And prizes!
Setting Up Hook a Duck:
- Fill the Basin: Set up the water basin and fill it with enough water to allow the ducks to float freely.
- Prepare the Ducks: Place the rubber ducks in the water. Each duck should have a loop attached to its back and be head-up so the sticker on its base cannot be seen.
- Distribute Fishing Rods: Provide players with a fishing rod equipped with a small hook.
How to Hook the Ducks:
- Start the Game: Players stand around the basin or pond.
- Catch the Ducks: Using the fishing rods, players attempt to hook one of the floating ducks by the loop on its back.
- Winning a Prize: Successfully hooking a duck usually wins the player a prize. Prizes can vary depending on the event and the age group of the participants.
Patience is key for this game! Hook a Duck requires a bit of patience and a steady hand. Wait for the right moment to hook your duck.
Some players prefer targeting ducks that are closer or moving slower, while others might go for ducks further away for a bigger challenge.
Sometimes, ducks are numbered underneath, and the number corresponds to a specific prize. You could also have colour-coded duck stickers, with each colour representing a different prize tier. You could even dd a timer to increase the challenge, where players have to hook a duck before the time runs out.
Always ensure children are supervised when playing, especially around water!
