What to Wear and What to Prepare for a Day at the Fairground

Clothes and packing for funfair

A day at the fairground promises endless excitement, delightful chills, and heaps of fun. However, to make the most of your adventurous day out, it's essential to dress appropriately and pack smartly. Whether you're riding the towering roller coasters or simply enjoying the sweet scent of candy floss, a little preparation goes a long way. Here's our guide to ensure you're comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy the funfair rides and carnival games at We Are Tricycle's fabulous fairgrounds.

Dressing for the Funfair

  • Avoid Loose Clothing: Flowy skirts, oversized shirts, scarves or any garments that aren't well-secured can be a hazard on rides. They can get caught in machinery or flail about, obstructing your view or comfort. Instead, opt for well-fitted attire that remains snug on your body. Take a bag to pack away any essential loose clothing before you climb aboard any funfair rides or attractions.
  • Footwear Matters: Ditch the high heels or flip-flops. Wear closed-toe shoes with a good grip, like trainers, or sturdy footwear for muddy terrain such as some good work boots. Not only do trainers and boots provide better protection and comfort, but they also ensure you're not losing a shoe during an intense spin on the Waltzer!
  • Glasses and Eyewear: If you wear glasses, make sure they're securely fastened with a sports strap. Alternatively, consider wearing contact lenses if you're comfortable doing so. If your eyes are sensitive to the light, you might want to invest in a decent pair of sunglasses - but again, consider how to keep them secured.
  • Hats and Caps: While hats and caps are great for sun protection, ensure they're securely fastened, and avoid wearing them on any funfair rides where they might fly off - keep them safe in your bag.
  • Minimal Jewellery: Large earrings, loose bracelets, or long necklaces can become problematic on rides. It's best to leave them at home or, failing that, to store them securely in a bag when on a funfair ride
  • Don't Dress to Impress: Wear casual clothes that have already seen a little wear-and-tear. Expensive items can go missing, and posh garments could be ruined by food and drink. You might even be nauseous, and if the worst comes to the worst, you'll be pleased you left your Louboutins at home when your shoes are covered with yesterday's pizza!

Pack Your Bag with Funfair Essentials

Hopefully, you'll spend many long hours at the funfair, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying all the rides, games and entertainment available. Before you set off, fill your bag up with some essentials! Most fairgrounds simply allow passers-by to walk in and there are no bag checks, so you should be able to sneak in some outside food and drink - but please check beforehand to avoid disappointment!

  • Suns Cream: Even on cloudy days, UV rays can be potent. Make sure you slather on some broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply throughout the day, especially after funfair rides where you may sweat, such as thrill and white knuckle rides. You might be able to get away without bringing sun cream throughout much of the year, but for summer funfairs, it's an essential.
  • Water and Drinks: All the excitement can quickly make you thirsty. Pack a refillable water bottle. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but it also ensures you stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Snacks: While the aroma of fairground food is irresistible, having some energy bars, fruit, or nuts can be a lifesaver when you need a quick snack. There's usually catering and food stalls at a fairground, but it's nice to be able to grab something quick and easy, too!
  • Clothes: Accidental spills, unexpected water rides, or simply wanting to change after a sweaty ride – packing an extra set of clothes is always a smart move, and is near-essential if you're going to the funfair with younger children!
  • Phones: It goes without saying - we take our smartphones out with us everywhere these days! Keep your phone somewhere secure, such as in a zipped pocket, so you can grab it when required while ensuring it doesn't fly away from you on a high-speed rollercoaster.
  • Cash and Cards: While many funfair stalls now accept cards and contactless on smartphones, having some cash on hand is always a good idea.
  • First-Aid Basics: Plasters, antiseptic wipes, and some painkillers such as paracetamol can come in handy in a pinch. It's always better to be prepared - it would be a shame for a mild headache or for period pains to ruin your day. You may need some motion sickness tablets for the funfair too.
  • Lightweight Backpack: A small, lightweight backpack can store all your essentials and is easy to store at the base of rides or under your seat when possible.
  • Portable Phone Charger: With all the pictures and videos you'll be taking, your phone battery might deplete faster than usual. A portable charger can be a lifesaver.
  • Hand Sanitiser: It's always a good idea to have hand sanitiser, especially before tucking into your fairground treats. While funfair rides are usually wiped clean between uses, the masses of people at a fairground bring an even greater quantity of germs!
  • Weather Gear: Check the forecast before heading out. Packing a lightweight raincoat or poncho can be invaluable if showers are predicted.

With the right attire and a well-packed bag, you're all set to have a spectacular day at the fairground! A little preparation goes a long way - so make the most of your big day out and make sure you're dressed and prepared properly.
