30 May 21 - Five Funfair Classics

We often talk about the latest and greatest funfair and fairground rides in our blog, but it's worth looking at some of the classics, too. These rides are family-favourites, and thanks to their enduring popularity, you can expect them to see continual interest at your event. While our white knuckle and thrill rides appeal to thrill-seekers and dare-devils, everyone will want to climb aboard these old-time classic fairground rides.

The Carousel

The funfair carousel has been a staple of the travelling fairground since the Victorian age. While there are many variations of it, the premise is always the same - climb aboard your carriage and spin around a central point. The music and lights of this gorgeous ride are sure to evoke nostalgia.

The Ferris Wheel

The Ferris Wheel dates back to 1893 when it was unveiled by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr, who's name has been immortalised as the eponym. There's now a wide range of Ferris wheels available for all kinds of different purposes, including small child-sized wheels as well as giant wheels that wouldn't look out-of-place at a tourist hot-spot.

The biggest Ferris wheel in the world, as of the date of this blog, is 550ft and is in Las Vegas. It's appropriately called the High Roller.

Helter Skelters

Helter Skelter

The Helter Skelter amusement ride must seem like one of the most famous funfair or fairground rides ever created, but believe it or not, the Helter Skelter is primarily only used in the UK, and the word itself comes from Hull in the early 20th century. You might just think of the Helter Skelter as being a standard funfair slide, but it instead is a continual twist around a central point, and riders typically slide down the ride on a burlap sack.

Roller Coasters

Roller Coaster

A feature at the biggest and best fairgrounds, the roller coaster is always a thrill to ride on. People sit in a carriage and are protected by a safety bar or a harness as they speed along a track, with twists and turns galore sending the G-forces soaring.

There are roller coasters for children and adults available, as well as family-friendly options that are a hit for all ages.

The Waltzers

Roller Coaster

Less of a waltz and more of a dizzying spin, Waltzers are also older than you might expect, dating back to 1933. These funfair rides might seem like they're perennially-popular at carnivals and fairgrounds internationally, but again they're typically only seen on this small section of the world, as a British and Irish favourite.

However, in these two great countries, they're a centrepiece of the funfair! Sit in the Waltzer carriage and prepare to be span around as the ride circles over an undulating track.
