The Legend of the Laughing Funhouse Clown

Many funhouses have a collection of automated clowns, their laughs playing on a loop to entertain and, occasionally, terrify young visitors. However, amongst these mechanical jesters, there's said to be one that stands out – not because it laughs, but because it's haunted! Could it be a real person, hidden among the funfair clowns, ready to strike when the moment is right?
This rumour is abound at all kinds of funfairs, fairgrounds and theme parks. There's even the story of Elmer McCurdy, whose dead body found itself as a funhouse prop! But at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the Laughing Clown legend is particularly poignant, and has become a popular local legend.
The Laughing Man, as he's popularly called, is different from the rest. While other clowns are friendly and welcoming, and hoot, this particular clown has a sinister cackle, and follows visitors with an unyielding gaze. The juxtaposition of its stare amidst the cacophony of laughter is enough to send shivers down one's spine.
Originating in 1935, this clown was brought to Blackpool Pleasure Beach as a regular addition to the funhouse. However, its legacy took a sinister turn in 1991. A massive fire engulfed the Fun House, turning funfair rides and fairground attractions to ashes. Yet, when the smoke cleared and the damage was assessed, one figure stood eerily untouched – the Laughing Man.
This ghastly survival made it an instant funfair legend. Its manic laughter, which some claim to be a recording of an actual insane man from an asylum, can still be heard echoing throughout the park. The tale has transformed the clown into a dare – children urge their peers to approach it, while adults too can't help but feel an unsettling mix of amusement and fear.
Despite its intimidating presence, or perhaps because of it, the Laughing Man has become an icon of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and is waiting for visitors to this very day, scaring all who approach. The clown remains encased in its glass booth, a constant presence in the park.
As visitors walk by, some hurriedly, some hesitantly, its laughter fills the air, a reminder of the thin line between fun and fear.
And as for the legend that this was the only figure to escape the massive Fun House Fire? Whether true or the result of many tales spun over the years, the Laughing Funhouse Clown continues to be a staple of Blackpool's eerie allure. Next time you're in town, pay him a visit!
