Fairground Electrical Safety Regulations

Fairground electrical safety regulations in the UK by British Standards BS 7671: 'Requirements for Electrical Installations', specifically the section relating to temporary electrical installations. Whether you're setting up at a fairground, amusement park, or circus, it's important to make sure everything is electrically safe and up to code.
We've given you the highlights of these standards below. Please note that We Are Tricycle adheres to all UK fairground health and safety standards in all our operations.
Preventing Electrocutions and Shocks at Funfairs and Fairgrounds

To protect you, your staff and visitors against electrical injuries, it's important to follow certain protective measures, such as keeping electrical equipment out of reach by the use of containment devices, crowd barriers, insulation and other methods. Consider how to keep guests safe on fairground rides such as electric dodgems, which can only be operated at extra low voltage under special conditions, and which may have electricity just outside of arm's reach.
RCD (residual current device) protection ensures funfair rides and other temporary electrical installations are automatically disconnected from the power supply in case of a problem. One or more RCDs with a rated residual operating current of 300 mA or less are required. You may need to seek manufacturer instructions for the correct RCD, especially for DC devices.
All final circuits (like lighting, socket outlets, and mobile equipment) must also be protected by RCDs with a rated residual operating current of 30 mA or less. This extra protection is important to help prevent damage to cables.
Supplementary equipotential bonding is also important. This involves connecting two simultaneously accessible parts together, and helps ensure that all parts are at the same potential. This further reduces the risk of electric shock.
Finally, it's important to make sure that all wiring systems and equipment are suitable for their location and able to operate without problems. Protection against water and other external influences must be provided, and electrical equipment must have a minimum IP44 protection rating.
As for lighting installations, Section 740 includes requirements for things like IP ratings, fixing arrangements, mounting heights, access requirements, and restrictions on lamp holders. Make sure to check the full regulations for all the details!
